Auckland’s Motorway Network

• SH1 Northern Motorway: Albany to CBD. Auckland's busiest — 200,000+ vehicles per day.
• SH1 Southern Motorway: CBD to Papakura and beyond to Hamilton. Major commuter route.
• SH16 Northwestern Motorway: CBD to Westgate. West Auckland's primary motorway.
• SH18 Upper Harbour Motorway: Connects SH1 (Albany) to SH16 (Westgate).
• SH20 Waterview Connection: Connects Southern Motorway to Northwestern Motorway via the Waterview Tunnel.

If You Break Down on an Auckland Motorway

Immediately

1. Turn hazards on NOW — before you fully stop, as soon as you feel a problem
2. Move left — get to the emergency lane as far from live traffic as possible
3. Do not stop in a tunnel — if you break down approaching the Waterview or Harbour Bridge tunnels, try to reach the other end before stopping

Once Stopped

1. Stay in your vehicle if the emergency lane is wide enough — it is safer than being on foot
2. If you must exit, get out the passenger side (away from traffic) and move behind the barrier
3. Call 0800 705 211 — tell us which motorway, direction, and the nearest marker post number (white posts on motorway shoulders)
4. Call 111 if there is any risk to other drivers from your stopped position

The Auckland Harbour Bridge

Breaking down on the Harbour Bridge is a special scenario — the bridge has its own dedicated NZTA response team and limited shoulder space. If you break down on the bridge, turn hazards on, stay in the vehicle, and call 111 as well as our towing team. The bridge scenario is one where NZTA assistance and towing need to work together.
